Milton John

John Milton

I did some research on Milton John already in 1988, but started to study his work in more detail since 2008, when, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Milton’s birth, I organized an international conference together with my colleague Miklós Péti. The volume of that conference entitled Milton Through the Centuries (edited by Gábor Ittzés and Miklós Péti) was published in 2012. I began to publish various essays on Milton including pieces on the typological symbolism in Paradise Lost, various types of prayers, Milton’s view of history, his ideas on freedom and the steadfast character of Abdiel. Between 2011-2015, I was the leader of an OTKA (National Endowment for Humanities in Hungary) project together with colleagues Gábor Ittzés and Miklós Péti. The research aimed at preparing the critical edition of the Hungarian translation by István Jánosy. Unlike the vivid Shakespeare scholarship, there are only half a dozen scholars in my country who work on Milton. Therefore, I consider it crucial to be involved in the international Milton research with my colleagues.
