Bible, hermeneutics and theology

Biblia, hermeneutika, teológia

I am a scholar and a university professor. The source of my personal faith, as well as of my professional life, is the Christian Bible, which I study every morning following the reading traditions of the Lutheran Losung and the Calvinist Hungarian Bible Reading Guide. One of the recent projects of our Center for Hermeneutical Research is the United Bible Reader (EBI for its Hungarian acronym), which aims at creating a digital application  to unite the daily reading practices  of various Christian denominations, as well as that of Jewish believers. This would foster dialogues between the various denominations.

I began to be involved in the study of Hermeneutics while teaching at the University of Szeged. In 1987, I edited and published The Theory of Hermeneutics, a two-volume reader containing texts in general hermeneutics of mainly French and English speaking authors.  Within the same “Iconography and Interpretation” series, I published a reader of  Typological Symbolism.  Typology (or figuralism) is concerned with the interrelation of biblical texts; this is simultaneously a rhetorical figure, a mode of thinking, and a principle of intertextuality. The fresh study of this old exegetical method struck some new chords in literary, as well as in biblical studies both in Hungary and abroad. In 1992, I submitted and received my  CSc/PhD from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Since then, my hermeneutical concerns have focussed mainly on the Bible and my approach has been ultimately theological. In my first book,  The Lion and the Lamb. Figuralism and Fulfilment in the Bible, Art and Literature published by Macmillan and St Martin’s Press in 1992, I included iconography as well as literature in the discussion of biblical prefiguration. The second and enlarged edition by Wipf and Stock has the title Figura and Fulfillment. Typology in the Bible, Art and Literature. The Hungarian translation  soon followed with four new chapters under the title Az eljövendő árnyékai (The Shadows of the Future). Both enlarged versions were published in 2016. What I pursue is neither Old nor New Testament Hermeneutics per se, nor even Biblical Hermeneutics, but rather  Theological Hermeneutics, which I earlier called Christian Hermeneutics.

I am the Director of the Center for Hermeneutics Research of the Faculty of Arts at the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary.  In 1993, the Center was established as a Foundation for Hermeneutical Research by different universities with scholars from various denominations (Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Baptist). Over the past twenty-five years, the Center has sponsored various conferences and publications. Our best known series is the blue-covered Hermeneutikai Füzetek (Hermeneutical Booklets) with 37 issues published so far. This series contains studies about special issues related to the interpretation of the Bible.   The issues with a green cover contain primary texts of the Christian hermeneutical tradition. It was seen as a major breakthrough in Hungarian scholarship when we published the Hungarian translation of the first hermeneutical treatise in the Latin West, the Liber Regularum by Tyconius, a Donatist contemporary of St Augustine.

I was pleased to learn that a recent trend in American and British hermeneutics called Theological Interpretation of Scripture (TIS) is, in fact, very similar to my own concerns.  Major representatives of this group also read Scripture with a theological interest, reclaiming it from the exclusiveness of academic historical study and emphasize the significance of figural and Christological reading, or, “reading backwards” (Richard Hays).  This reading is achieved with an attentive ear to the polyphonic  interpretative tradition of the church, such as patristics, reformation, pietism, orthodoxy, modernism and postmodernism.

As a Lutheran, I can learn from the  Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions of interpretation, from the clear and distinct logic of Calvinist hermeneutics, from the life-oriented approaches of the evangelicals. However, I disavow the attitude of fundamentalism, as well as biases that quickly label all biblical approaches as fundamentalist. For me, the narrow hermeneutical path  is between literalism and liberalism (see George Hunsinger’s “Beyond Literalism and Expressionism” published since in Hungarian as Nr. 29 in the series Hermeneutikai Füzetek.)

I have developed a course Hermeneutics and Theological Hermeneutics  for students of theology, which I have been teaching at the Evangelical Lutheran University since 2004 and at the Faculty of Theology of the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary since the 2010.
